MX SERIES APPLICATIONS
Raytek Infrared Thermometers: Indispensable Tools in Facility Maintenance

Raytek Infrared ThermometersThe ST handheld noncontact thermometer easily determines whether motors, boilers, bearings, electrical systems, and all types of operating equipment are functioning properly, and detects signs of developing problems. Raytek thermometers quickly and conveniently measure surface temperatures from a safe distance to keep your plant operating efficiently and preventing costly shutdowns.

How do I measure temperature with an IR thermometer?
There are three Raytek noncontact thermometer measurement techniques:
• Spot: determine the absolute surface temperature of an object.
• Temperature differential: compare two spot measurements against each other.
• Scanning: detect changes along a wide or continuous region target.

What are the benefits of using IR thermometers?
• Effectively find your problems quickly and safely, saving time and cost
• IR thermometers are accurate, usually within one degree
• IR thermometers safely read hard-to-reach or inaccessible objects

Equipment Maintenance. Check moving parts in motors and gear work for hot spots. Temperature change can indicate developing problems in many types of equipment, from ovens and boilers to freezers. Routine temperature audits of generators and their bearings can prevent expensive repairs.

Building Controls. Monitor HVAC/R components for quick energy audits and room balancing in a short time.

Troubleshoot engine problems. Temperature is a vital indicator of how well cooling systems are performing, or whether friction, vibration and other conditions are creating wear in braking systems and bearings.

Process/Product. Monitor process line equipment. Check the temperature of different products on production lines from rubber tires to plastic and cellophane wrapping to chocolate bars.

Vehicle/Fleet Maintenance.

Tools for Diagnostic and Preventative of Electrical Systems and Equipment
Raytek Infrared Thermometer

Infrared Thermometers are proven money-saving diagnostic and predictive tools used for electrical systems and equipment maintenance inspection. Raytek full line of infrared thermometers provide precise readings with 1-4% accuracy, and from as far away as 180 feet depending on the model used. These instruments are lightweight, rugged, and easy to use.

Measuring Electrical Components
Noncontact infrared thermometers measure the surface temperature of an object from a safe distance, making them an indispensable tool in any electrical maintenance operation.

Electrical Applications
Prevent equipment failures and unscheduled down time in the following applications.
Connectors - Electrical connections can gradually loosen the connector, and generate heat as a result of repeated heating (expansion) and cooling (contraction), and/or dirt, carbon deposits, and corrosion. A noncontact thermometer quickly determines temperature increases that indicate serious problems.
Electric Motors - To maintain lifespan of motors, inspect supply power connections and circuit breakers (or fuser) for equal temperatures.
Motor Bearings - Detect hot spots and schedule repairs or replacements before problems lead to equipment failure.
Motor Winding Insulation - Prolong the life of winding insulation by measuring its temperature.
Phase-to-Phase Measurement - Check cables and connectors for equal phase-to-phase temperatures for induction motors, large computers, and other equipment.
Transformers - Check the windings of air-cooled units for hotspots that indicate winding flaws.
Uninterrupted Power Supplies - Identify hot localized connections in the UPS output filters. A cold spot may indicate an open DC filter circuit.
Back-up Batteries - Check low-voltage batteries for proper connection. Poorly attached cell strap connections may heat up enough to burn posts.
Ballasts - Detect overheated ballast before it begins to smoke.
Utilities - Identify hot spots in connections, cable splices, transformers, and other equipment. Several Raytek models feature optical ranges of 60:1 or greater, bringing almost any target easily within reach.

Factory Mutual FAQ
What is Intrinsic Safety?  (ST80-IS)
Who can benefit by using this Intrinsically Safe device?
How do I know my ST80-IS is Intrinsically Safe?
What is Nonincendive?  (MX4P-NI)
How does Nonincendive differ from Intrinsic Safety?
Q:  What is Intrinsic Safety?

Back to ST Series

Back to MX Series

A:  Intrinsic Safety is a technique for preventing explosions in hazardous areas. Intrinsic safety is achieved by limiting the energy and surface temperature of a device during normal operation, or during foreseeable fault conditions, to an insufficient level to ignite an explosive environment. The presence of gases and vapors can lead to ignition. An Intrinsically Safe rating is earned by passing the rigorous approval process of a recognized entity. Upon approval, the exact approved hazardous situations are displayed on the label attached to the unit.

Factory Mutual is one of the most recognized approving organizations in North America. Its approval is accepted in many parts of the world. (Checking with the end-user customer is the only way to be sure outside the United States.) Certification from TUV is the most common approval in Europe. The ST80-IS does not have TUV approval and that rating is not currently being sought.
Q:  Who can benefit by using this Intrinsically Safe device?
A:  - Petrochemical refineries and tank farms
- Oil exploration, especially offshore drilling rigs
- Pumping stations for petroleum and gas
- Solid propellant manufacture
- Chemical/ pharmaceutical plants
- Ink, laminate, and coating processes that emit volatile vapors
- Fire departments in situations where flammable gases can be present
- Hazardous waste disposal and sewage
- Aviation fueling and maintenance (also, any refueling situation for rail, auto, ship)
- Liquid natural gas storage
- Arms manufacture and storage
- Boiler rooms
- Hydrogen generating facilities
Q:  How do I know my ST80-IS is Intrinsically Safe?
A:  All Intrinsically Safe Approved equipment must carry a label that specifies exactly where it can be used and the name of the testing laboratory. The exact approval language can be very important for a customer determining if a particular application is covered by the FM Intrinsically Safe approval.

The label on the side of the ST80-IS reads:

"FM Approved. Intrinsically Safe, Class I, Division 1, Groups A, B, C, D.
Class I, Zone 0, AEX ia IIC, T4 at 50C when used with 9v alkaline battery."

This language means that the ST80-IS can be used where flammable material is present continuously and in the presence of acetylene, hydrogen, ethylene or propane gases. The ST80-IS is rated T4, i.e. its maximum surface temperature is certified to be 135 C for safety(though Raytek specifies a maximum ambient temperature of 50 for reliable thermometer operation. The ST80-IS is FM approved for Class I (gases) therefore the approval does not apply to atmospheres containing coal dust, grain dust, metal dust, or fibers.
Q:  What is “Nonincendive”?
A:  A Nonincendive rating (NI) indicates that an electronic device has been tested to standards for preventing explosions in hazardous areas by limiting the ability of equipment to ignite a specified flammable gas or vapor-in-air mixture. Nonincendive equipment is incapable of releasing sufficient electrical or thermal energy to ignite flammable gases or vapors under NORMAL operation and environmental conditions. Nonincendive devices are approved for use in Class I, Division 2 locations
Q:How does “Nonincendive” Differ from “Intrinsic Safety”?
A:  ·Intrinsically Safe Approved units are approved for use where flammable gases or vapors do exist or may exist.
·Nonincendive approved units are approved for use where flammable gases or vapors may exist.
